End of First Term 2014 / 2015

Dear Parents and Carers,

I find myself looking back over an adventurous, action-packed and successful term at The British International Schools in Kurdistan - Hawler, which started with the introduction of a new Senior Management Team and many new teachers. Throughout this whole term the commitment, dedication and hard work of students and staff continues to amaze me and we are seeing this with the results our students are attaining.

As the festive period approaches there are a number of successes to celebrate from the past term. The introduction of the School House system is allowing our students to become more involved and aware in everyday school life and the importance of belonging to a great band of students. We have already awarded this term 7 students for achieving their Bronze award for great work and good behaviour.

A number of weeks ago, we held a celebration assembly to mark the bravery of two of our secondary students for showing initiative and caring natures.

Our school has been supporting the RISE Foundation in their attempts to raise enough money to fund their Buy A Blanket campaign for the refugees who have had to take shelter in Kurdistan. We are very proud of the students who have reached out to this charity to help. We have also been collecting shoeboxes filled with small items to help the children displaced in the current situation.

The school has been lucky enough to now have a fantastic new sports facility, with changing rooms, a sports field, basketball court and football pitches. Our new basketball team and football teams are formed and in the process of training hard to enable them to participate in inter school competitions.

We also have a full complement of Cambridge University press text books shipped in from England, that our students have been using to great effect, with our secondary students studying hard towards their iGCSE’s.

Our music department now has an exciting range of new musical instruments to enrich the student’s curriculum.

I am really looking forward to a very productive new term in 2015, with many more exciting opportunities for our students, please keep a close eye on our school website and facebook site for updates.

I hope this brief glimpse of our school via our website gives you an insight into the life of The British International Schools in Kurdistan - Hawler, our ethos and vision for all our students. I know that we have so much to be proud of: a consistent record of achievement over a number of years; a varied programme of enrichment and enhancement opportunities for students; excellent links with our community, and a dedicated and talented team of staff who work diligently for the benefit of every student.

As a Cambridge approved International School, we are authorised to teach the University of Cambridge International syllabus and to conduct their examinations, allowing your child to gain internationally accredited and recognised qualifications.

Here at BISK we have 3 very simple Core Aims:

  • We will help each of our students achieve the highest and most relevant set of qualifications possible.
  • We will help our students become ‘well-rounded’ and caring individuals ready for their adult life.
  • We will achieve these in a collaboration of listening to and working for each other.

How do we work to achieve these? By creating positive working relationships with and between all.

We also have a large team of support staff who work selflessly to support some of our students who may find some of the demands of academic settings more of a challenge.
